About Ira Guttentag, MD, FACS

Dr. Guttentag has extensive surgical experience in the areas of Sports Medicine and Knee and Shoulder Reconstruction. He has been the Medical Director and Head Team Physician for the Tampa Bay Lightning since 2002.

Dr. Guttentag provides care to athletes of all ages and levels. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Florida Medical Clinic Orlando Health. He has a particular interest in knee and ligament reconstruction, rotator cuff repairs, meniscus and cartilage repair and regeneration, and total knee replacement.

A leader in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee, Dr. Guttentag specializes in minimally invasive total and partial knee replacement, which allows for a quicker, more pain-free recovery. In addition, he is one of the first in Florida to perform the Biomet XP Anterior Cruciate Sparing Total Knee Replacement. A native of New York, Dr. Guttentag moved to Florida in 1993. He is married with three children. A sports enthusiast, Dr. Guttentag enjoys tennis, running and weight lifting.

I was off pain meds after a week and at my 15 day post operation, he removed me from home nurse and PT and I transferred to outpatient PT. For 18 months I suffered with swelling and pain in my right knee. Back in January 2020 elective surgeries were not allowed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so I went with stem cell which promised me noninvasive relief. "I figured, if this Dr. does surgery on elite athletes like the Lightning, then he’s as good as I’ll be able to get."

Dr. Guttentag, I’m writing this to thank you for fixing my knee. I injured it while going through Air Assault school when I was 19. The Army surgeon tried to fix it without success. 3 months later I went to Afghanistan with the infantry. It was always loose. I had to constantly think about it and favor it, even while ruck marching and getting shot at. After 1 year of deployment, countless field activities, Recon school, and another year of Special Forces selection and training, they tried to fix it again It didn’t work. It was still loose, and I deployed again 7 months later to Afghanistan with 7th Group Special Forces. I remember distinctly, one day, I was on top of a mud hut with a sniper riffle and came under heavy fire. RPHs and bullets were whizzing by my head and I thought this was it, I’m going to die. Even with all that on my mind, when I went to jump down and get some cover, I still had to stop a second and think, “hold on, go slow, don’t hurt the knee”. After 7 years of service, I asked another army surgeon if he thought I should get it fixed. He said that it would cause too much arthritis and to leave it alone. So, for the next 7 years I did that and felt it loose. I tried to get back in shape and was struggling with the instability when I had enough and looked up private surgeons. I figured, if this Dr. does surgery on elite athletes like the Lightning, then he’s as good as I’ll be able to get. Immediately after surgery, I could feel the difference. I had an endpoint. Now, 9 months later, I’m back to squatting 185, which is good for me at this point, and when I run, it feels solid. It doesn’t feel loose anymore. It’s 100% different. I didn’t know this was possible. For the first time in 16 years I feel like I can get back to normal. It may tear again, I don’t care, just these 9 months and knowing that it could be fixed again is worth the time, money, and effort for me. I am so grateful to you for fixing this. You were successful where others failed. You’re a real Doctor. The real deal. When you go to work you should walk with your head held high. "I celebrated my ten week follow up with a 100 mile bike ride"

On December 11th, I had a partial knee replacement and everything turned out great. I was off the walker after the second day and haven't looked back since. I was back on my bike by the third week and celebrated my ten week follow up with a hundred mile bike ride. I really can't tell a difference between the implant and my normal knee. I'm still a little numb but it's getting better every day. The fact that I recovered so quickly is a testament to the skill of the surgeon and his team.

Dr. Ira Guttentag is a doctor I really admire. He is a very skilled and caring surgeon who has operated on my knees twice. Both times have been good experiences. This time I am only four weeks out from surgery and doing well. Yesterday, I went up and down our 17-step staircase three times with only having to touch the handrail. Dr. Guttentag is no nonsense, but if you pay attention to what he says, this is very doable.

Like many others, I struggled with knee pain for several years and did the gambit of shots. I met with Dr Guttentag and was scheduled for bilateral knee replacements. I had the first one done Dec 2014 and the second one March 2015. The first knee I was in the hospital two nights and the second knee just overnight. I was up walking the next morning and doing physical therapy. Both knees were a success and I walked into the first ten day post op appointments using a cane for balance only. It is now the end of April, I am back to swimming and riding my bicycle with minimal scarring or pain. I really like Dr Guttentag's post op plan of care. He is conservative with compression socks and wraps and makes sure one has adequate pain medicine. I think his belief in using the continuous passive machine (CPM) for exercising the knee the first three weeks is a key element for successful flexion and extension of the knee. I can bend my knee further than I have been able to in several years. I have two hiking trips scheduled for this summer and I look forward to both of them thanks to Dr Guttentag. I also want to give a high five to his clinic staff. Glad I listened to Dr. Guttentag!! After my primary care physician told me I needed surgery for what he thought was a “bone spur” with built up cartilage in my ankle that wouldn’t allow me to play sports, I thought I might need a second opinion. I was referred to Dr. Guttentag at Florida Medical Clinic Orlando Health from a friend. My initial consultation went well. After the x-ray Dr. Guttentag asked me to walk around the room. He noticed how pronated my walk was and recommended to do physical therapy and get orthotics before thinking of surgery. Glad I listened to him. The “bone spur” turned out to be an inflamed tendon that was swollen from playing sports and being pronated.
