Dr. Benjamin Tharian is a board-certified physician specializing in gastroenterology and hepatology. He is widely recognized for his expertise in managing complex digestive disorders, particularly through advanced endoscopic procedures. His work includes therapeutic endoscopy, balloon enteroscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endo bariatrics, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), third-space endoscopy, and interventional endoscopy for pediatric patients.
Dr. Tharian received his medical training at Medical College Trivandrum and Kottayam in India. He completed a residency with the National Health Service and a five-year fellowship in gastroenterology, hepatology, and general medicine in the United Kingdom. Prior to his move to the United States, he practiced medicine in both the UK and Australia. He most recently held the position of associate professor of gastroenterology and hepatology, as well as director of general and advanced endoscopy, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and hepatology in the US, UK, and Australia, Dr. Tharian is a fellow of both the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE). He maintains permanent medical licenses with the General Medical Council in the UK and the Australian Medical Council. Dr. Tharian actively participates in several committees for both the ACP and ASGE and frequently speaks at international conferences.
He is deeply committed to advancing endoscopic training and quality improvement projects, having authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications in interventional endoscopy. Dr. Tharian serves on editorial boards and reviews articles for various peer-reviewed journals. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Dean’s Award for Best Consulting Physician at UAMS in 2021. Passionate about education, he established the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship at UAMS, where he served as executive director.
