Originally from Ohio, Dr. Careccia was raised in Winter Park, Florida, and she initially became interested in medicine while volunteering at a local hospital during high school. Her undergraduate studies were completed at University of Florida, where she graduated with honors and participated in additional volunteer work and medical research at Shands Hospital.
While attending medical school at the University of Miami, Dr. Careccia became interested in dermatology, due to the breadth of the field and opportunity to work with patients of all ages. During medical school, she performed additional research in wound healing and was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.
Upon graduation, she completed her internship and medical residency at Baptist Hospital at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. At the outset of residency, Dr. Careccia was drawn dermatopathology (the microscopic study and interpretation of skin specimens), as she felt that knowledge of microscopic patterns and disease allows her to better care for her patients.
In pursuance of additional training, she was selected for a dermatopathology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. After completion of the subspeciality training, she relocated with her family to the Tampa Bay area in 2006, where she has been treating patients and interpreting dermatopathology specimens since. In her spare time, Dr. Careccia enjoys spending time with family, reading a good book, and enjoying the beautiful Florida outdoors under the protection of a hat and sunscreen!
