Lowering the Risk of Lung Cancer Recurrence

Quitting smoking and eating healthy may help lower your risk of lung cancer recurrence. Ways you can decrease this risk include:

  • Avoid Smoking – If you smoke, quit now. Quitting has been shown to help people with lung cancer live longer, even if the cancer has spread.
  • Being Active – Research suggests that people who get regular physical activity after treatment have a lower risk of lung cancer recurrence.
  • Eat a Healthy Diet – While it’s inconclusive eating any specific type of diet can help lower your risk of lung cancer, there are clearly benefits to eating well.

Understanding the Stages of Lung Cancer

Stage I
The cancer has not spread from the lungs.

Stage II
The cancer is located in the lungs and nearby lymph nodes.

Stage III
Cancer is in the lung and the lymph nodes of the chest. If cancer has spread only to lymph nodes on the same side of the chest as the lung tumor, it is designated IIIA. If the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes of the opposite side of the chest, it is called IIIB.

Stage IV
Cancer has spread from the lung to lymph nodes and other organs.
